Obama called the Arizona immigration law invalid
Today, May 19, President Barack Obama said of the controversial immigration law in Arizona, which has caused discontent not only in neighboring Mexico, but within the United States.
According to the White House, the law that would tighten the regime of stay of migrants, is discriminatory and does not contribute to the strengthening of relations between Mexico and Washington.
"The law is incorrect and potentially discriminatory practice ... It is a kind of evidence of destruction of our immigration system," - said Obama, speaking at a joint with Mexico's President Felipe Calderon.
According to the U.S. president, to address issues related to illegal migration, the United States needs to revise legislation on migration in general and to conduct a large-scale migration reform, rather than resorting to the adoption of such local laws. In this case, the president said, the administration intends to seek the assistance of the Republican Party and use the experience of its representatives, traditionally pro-tightening immigration rules.
We note that the law in question, should enter into force in July. The document allows the Arizona Police inspect the papers of people who, in their opinion, may be in the U.S. illegally. This lack of documents is the reason for the detention and subsequent deportation.
Many in the U.S. and abroad are called a law unconstitutional because the document supposedly calls the police to check the documents based on race or ethnicity. Critics also note that, under the old rules, the right to inspect documents have only the federal immigration police and some local bodies.
Meanwhile, the majority of Americans support such harsh measures against immigrants. According to a survey by U.S. media, about 42% of U.S. residents supported the new law, 24% objected to its entry into force, 29% reacted to the new initiative is neutral.
Recall that in early May, the City of Los Angeles announced Arizona boycott. They banned the city administration staff to travel to this state on business and enter into contracts with his company. The reason was that same law, which, according to city authorities, does not allow an American without a passport to get to Arizona.
